Supporting a Sponsor That Supports Cheaters

Recently, there have been a few topics on our forum about the advertisers that support webmasters that openly cheat other webmasters. The sponsors that do this seem to think it isn't really any of their business. As long as the dishonest webmaster doesn't cheat them, they are fine with paying for the cheating webmaster's traffic. I actually witnessed this first hand during my last gig with another company. A friend to most of us was losing a ton of money because of another webmaster. When I started working for this company, I asked the owners to finally do what was right and terminate the thieving bastard. After being told, "our friend" would not send his traffic to the company I worked for, they decided to finally terminate the thieving prick. All was fine until near the end of my tour of duty when I discovered, all the owners told the cheater was to stop sending traffic from the domain, "our friend" knew about.

So, being the devil's advocate for a second...One mans cheating ways may be another man's creative advertising. In a lot of cases, this is true. I would not call someone that sends out mass mailings a cheater. And, I would not call someone that has found a new way to get a top position on a Search Engine a cheater. But, if someone is hotlinking images, has misspellings of a popular domain that they do not own or anything thing else that takes money from an honest webmaster, they are a cheater.

What about the sponsor that pays these cheaters to stay in business and take from honest webmasters? As for me, I am done with the sponsor. If the cheater did not get paid for their ill gotten gain, they would be out of business. The only way to stop a cheater is to make it unprofitable for him or her to cheat. If you find someone that is stealing from honest webmasters and let their sponsor know about it, they should stop paying them. They may think it is none of their business but, cheating honest webmasters is everyone's business.
