BANDWIDTH SAVING BY DESIGN
By Hazel from Hazel's Harem
The aim of any site is to attract as much relevant targeted traffic as possible; And the more traffic generated, the more bandwidth is consumed. While this may not be a big problem for many sites dealing largely in text pages, for an image rich site [in particular adult sites] it can become a bit of a nightmare.
As any adult webmaster knows only too well, bandwidth costs bucks. There are plenty of stories of people who have been slapped with overage charges in the hundreds of dollars region because their sites or galleries have attracted so much traffic. Again this may not be a vast problem if the revenue generated has covered that cost.
But like any other business the world of the adult webmaster is intended to make money, and make as much profit as possible. One avenue to reducing outgoing costs is to reduce your bandwidth usage. This may be achieved by good 'tight' page and site design.
Start with the basics
Okay. Let us assume you have a hot business plan which includes a linksite or TGP as a core, or hub, and you intend driving traffic from hundreds of freesites or galleries. Where you are generating your traffic is hopefully going to make you some income. Surfers who don't spend there have a second opportunity when they visit your main site. Great plan. But how much bandwidth is each page burning?
Your gallery page probably looks very attractive. It has a header logo, lots of thumbnails, a few razzle-dazzle flashing advertising banners and some kick-ass sales pitch text. The whole thing comes in at about 100kb. That's before your surfer looks at the full size images. Not all of it may actually be required to get your message across.
There are several schools of thought as to overall size of page, with or without graphics, but a simple rule of thumb I generally adhere to is: If it isn't absolutely necessary - don't use it.
Plan before you start building. Make out a rough draft of your page with everything you would like to include. Then take away all the bits and pieces that are not really essential to making it work or being informative. For example; Do you really need that flashy picture of a jumping dildo to sell your adult toys? Most likely not. Keep the page content simple.
