Pick Your Colors Wisely
Recently, a webmaster asked about which colors are best for a web page. Picking the proper colors are much like any other advertising decision you may make for your pages. Meaning, there needs to be a lot of trial and error.
The careful use of color can make the document easier to read, easier to navigate and more appealing to the reader. The proper use of color can also increase the user's performance in computer based decision support systems. In contrast, a poor selection of text-background color combinations can significantly detract from a document's readability.
Ensure that foreground and background color combinations provide sufficient contrast when viewed by someone having color deficits or when viewed on a black and white screen.
The number of colors typically used in web page design is a reduced set of only 216 "browser safe" colors. The reduced set is used because of the display limitations of some, usually older, personal computer systems. Almost all personal computers can display the reduced set of 216 colors while many systems can not display all 16,777,216 colors.
Picking colors seems to be more of an art than a science. While you should never use color combinations that are impossible to read, you don't want to use color combinations that are effortless to read. You want to use a color combination that is more of a happy medium between the two. There is actually an algorithm that will help you with the decision. But, for me, common sense is all you really need.
Have a Good Day
