Five days ago, I received a call from a woman in Ridgecrest who had seen Maggie's shared post on Facebook. She spotted a dog loose on her road, recognised it as possibly being Maggie and called to her. The dog responded to "Maggie" and approached her. She couldn't, however, get the dog to go into her fenced-in yard. She snapped this pic and called me.

I arrived 20 minutes later. I called the woman to get an idea where she had seen her. She told me that her neighbors were attempting to catch her and that she had heard a yelp.

I went to the neighbor's house. Three women came out, closing the door behind them. In the house, I had noticed two dogs, neither looking anything at all like Maggie. I explained why I was there. They said that their dog who "looks just like" Maggie had gotten out of the fence, but they caught her. They didn't offer to show her to me and I didn't ask. End of visit.

Since then, I have been driving to that address, usually twice a day. Sometimes, their two big dogs are outside, but never a dog like Maggie.

Today, I stopped by a veterinarian's office to ask if they automatically scan for a microchip when a customer brings in a new dog. (They don't.) I explained my story and the vet said that I need to go to animal control and have it followed up.

So, I ended up at Ridgecrest Animal Control and told them everything. They too thought it seemed a little fishy. Oddly, when I told them they address, it was familiar. Those people have a had issues with their dogs escaping and neighbors have complained. They checked their database: the home in question has a husky and a large brindle dog, nothing looking like Maggie. (Remember, they said their dog looks just like Maggie.) The officer told me to contact the Kern County Sheriff's Department.

A sheriff's deputy met me near the address, asked me to wait there while she investigated. She returned a few minutes later. The man who answered the door said they have only two dogs, neither looking like Maggie. The deputy said she was going to drive by the house tomorrow morning to see if she spots Maggie. Obviously, she can't demand to search the house.
