After posting the above I realised that some people reading it may not realise exactly why the words "click here" are so important. It is
not to tell them where to click, most people will work that out for themselves. It is because people have a subconscious tendency to obey orders. An advert saying "Members of this site get to have sex with a supermodel of their choice." Will get people thinking "That is nice, I wish I were a member." Then ignore the ad and go on to the next site/gallery giving them free porn. But an advert saying "
Click here to join so that you can have sex with a supermodel of your choice." Will get them to click. Or even better "
Click here then
join this site so that you can have sex with a supermodel of your choice." Will get some people clicking and joining.
If you are reading this and think I am an idiot then test it: I doubt if any of your friends stand when you enter a room. So mentally split them into two groups. Say politely to people in one group "It is good manners to stand when a friend enters the room." and see how few will do so. With the other group say, as an order, as you enter the room "Stand up when I enter the room!" and you will find that most obey the first time you do it (don't keep doing it or they may punch you).
Another test is: When with a friend, when conversation dies, suddenly bark a pointless order at them. Something like "Jump in the air!" "Touch your nose!" "Put your finger in your ear!" You will be amazed how often they obey this stupid command.
