My theory (and this is just IMHO, not "scientifically proven") is that the problem is that Google use "relevant advertising". I find this does not work. For example, I got no clicks using AdSense on a site about dogs. Switching to sponsors selling dog related stuff, got no sales. But since switching to my own products I have sold several spell books, books on UFOs, books on ESP, and even a few copies of "Mistress Of Planet Dominatrix" on the dog site!
I'm guessing that this is because, if you go to a site on a particular subject it is because you are interested in that subject, and if you are interested in the subject you will have already bought most of what you need, or at least already know suppliers, so are not interested in adverts of that sort. But if you are shown something new, you might be tempted.
