I'm not sure myself but it wouldn't be the first time Christianity has made concessions to pagan rituals to ease in the assimilation of "heretics." They did it in Ireland (some Irish folklore has been Christianized and accepted as being compatible with Christianity; Irish celtic art has influenced Christian symbolism there) The same goes for Christmas. It derived from a pegan celebration from Northern Europe.
