PDF is built-in to Macs. In fact it is the technology used to display everything on the screen. To make a PDF you just hit print and choose PDF instead of actually sending it to the printer.

An application called Preview is used to view PDFs. The free version of Adobe Acrobat reader has more features then Preview but for 99% of my needs I just use Preview as it is much faster then Acrobat reader.

But Acrobat is also sold for Macs. It has features that expand the Mac's built-in features. People who do print work need these features and some other users too.

PDF is a nice format if you want you document to look exactly the same on everyone's computer.
