First of all, I wish you the best in your recovery. I have had several folks in my life(including GF), dealing/dealt with what you are. They mostly have all come though the other end. But they all know it's a step by step process. No backtracking allowed.
Also, as for as your pains, have you looking into acupuncture? I know a couple of people who swear by it now.
