Everything with submitting is about getting traffic to your free sites, so a link list with no traffic is more or less useless, but a way to get submitters is putting a link to your LL in your sig here, getting to know people here, and last but not least, build some traffic.... Bought traffic generally stinks, so that is not the way I would recommend going about it. You could build and submit some free sites yourself, and on each and every page of those free sites You put a link to your link list. This link counts as an outgoing link so only 2 ads to sponsors and an ad for your LL on each page... I do this and generate heaps of traffic to my link lists.
People prefer the big guys for a couple of reasons.... More traffic, reliability (they are big, they have been around long and they will stay around) and simply because those are the ones you find first when doing a search.
