Think of it as a one page website on a free host , they have a few modules you can add and you can monetize with an Amazon , Adsense and Chitika (works on a revenue sharing bases with Squidoo.)

You basically add your content with a few links to your money site , however some people do have a network of these sites and generate an income , most do however use them as a way to develop linkwheels , together with Blogger , Wordpress and various other free hosted platforms.

You can also check out Hubpages as it is similar to Squidoo - Since the Panda update I think Hubpages and Squidoo have lost some of their authority , but I still think that you can use it as part of your mainstream back linking strategy.
