When things get tough the better workers (that is smarter workers not harder workers) survive. Those that are not so good and were only making money because there was a lot of cash around, and even an idiot could make a good living, are the first to find their profits dwindle to unsustainable levels. In short it is not "webmasters with any sense" who have/are going, it is those without enough sense to be able to run a successful campaign in hard times. This recession will sort the men from the boys (or girls from the women) and we will get rid of a lot of surplus idiots, the better webmaster will still be here in ten years time (unless they make enough money to retire, or leave for personal reasons).

And that will give one big advantage for those of us who are certified geniuses. Once the idiots who think all they have to do to make money is throw up a few free porn sites, then sit back and count the money are gone, there will be less free porn about, and it will be easier to sell stuff again. But that won't be for several years yet - so those of us still here are going to have to work smarter in the meantime.

So Patti, I know that Simon was only being funny, but seriously: If you have what it takes, if you can think about how to make sales, know all about successful advertising (or intend to learn), then welcome to the world of running adult websites, it will be hard work, but can be very profitable. And most of the people in this business are very friendly (with a few exceptions). So you should have fun and make money. But if you think that all you have to do is throw up some free pictures/videos, bung on some sponsor's banners, and do a bit of traffic trading, then you are wasting your time. If that is the case, pretend Simon is not joking and take his advice.

On a personal note, I look forward to the time when all the idiots have gone and we geniuses can begin having intelligent intellectual discussions on this board. Anyone want to start with a debate on the social implications of the works of Proust?
