I think the anti war protesters have grown up a bit in the last 30 years. When I was a kid they were against the people who actually did the fighting, and returning heroes got spat on. Today most of them protest against the war and the government, not the heroes. And although they don't actually join in the applause, they don't condemn the returning warriors either, just the people who sent them there in the first place.
