Because the area affected is so wide and many of the places are both remote and poor, it will be a little while before the numbers of dead are really known. It is also likely that a percentage of the dead will either not be found, not be known about or simply not counted.
What is perhaps worse is that possibly hundreds of thousands of people will have had their livelihoods literally washed away, fishermen that lost their boats and nets, shopkeepers who have lost their businesses, farmers who's land will have been ruined by the salt water, the list goes on and on.... and these are people who live on literally nothing because they have nothing (by our standards).
