This is why I wish affiliate programs would do a little research before they put on their "Marketing To Webmasters" hat:

I once was considering surfing a lot of the link list owners sites that post here, and hitting them up via email or ICQ (if I had it) to see if they wanted any suggestions to convert us. Or just to say hi and let them know my contact info. if they had ads for us up.
But then I remembered also seeing a thread where someone was upset that an affiliate rep emailed them after checking out their list. Most everyone replying in the thread was pretty much saying it was spam. So I scrapped that idea pretty quick. |badidea|

PR_Tom, I think that if you want to contact an individual webmaster, you need to come to the table with some info, some understanding, and some really good material that will make a difference.
Personal mail should be personal - no stock format, no cut and paste... make the link list owner think you actually checked out their site and made some notes or have some information. Just firing off a form letter is the fastest way to make people feel like nothing.
Now, you might also want to consider looking at your accounts and trying to group them together... link site owners here, TGP owners there, other programs sending exit hits or whatever over there... then you can segment market at least a bit :)

I guess I was just kind of trying to say that I can see the desire to go ahead and contact people when you're pumped up about something, but also the need to know the audience a little bit more before hand.
I prefer to be more passive anyway to be honest. I'm around at least 9 to 5 and post on several boards etc. so easy enough access.
It's going to be hard to resists ICQ'g GG the next time we release some FHG's now though! hehe |roses|

You guys ever known somebody who owns more than one site?
I know its hard to believe but some people do have a few sites other than the one in their account.
I was trying to cover all my bases with Green Guy and I got him everything he needed.
Metal Cash didn't send out the generic email because the 123 Program isn't officially launched yet, I'm specifically hitting webmasters that are already part of the program and sending traffic to get first shot at these sites.
Green Guy was rude to me for no reason, so I was rude to him.

If GreenGuy would have taken a second and been calm and read then he would have obviously seen that Captain said that this program is not released yet and he was hitting up webmasters before the program launched to give them a change to push this program first... for all of you guys that don't understand. That means no affiliate email yet.
If any of you took the time to visit the link that Captain sent him, you would see that it's a list of sites like he has listed currently. After he said "no thanks" to the galleries he offered him paysite links. Please read and look before you post people.
Sheesh, this is turning into GFY.

having some background in the telemarketing industry (i know a guy who did it for a living) its obvious what was going on here

caller: standard rebuttal
greenguy: no thanks
caller: second rebuttal.
and so forth. its annoying, bad, telemarketing bullshit. and if the rep was informed at all he'd known that starting off talking about galleries is fucking stupid and makes him look like an ass.
and the worst of it is that the rep becomes beligerant after the third rebuttal. calls greenguy an asshole. its pathetic and stupid and its not a great way to run a company.

to continue to fall back on the 'its gg's board so everyone will side with him' argument is ludicrious and it shows the major character flaw that you exhibitied in your original conversation. You dont think you can be wrong.

yeah - seems really fucking stupid to go from webmaster to webmaster when you can just send out a newsletter & be done with it
Personally I see something very wrong with that actually, GreenGuy flipping out on Captain instead of reading and seeing that the 123 Program isn't launched yet and Captain is infact going webmaster to webmaster giving them a chance to make cash with this.
well josh, that's your opinion.
and I bet that the idiot who calls my house during dinner to sell me some great money saving oppurtunity has the same fucking opinion.
but if the reciever of the call or the recieiver of the ICQ doesnt want the fucking spam bullshit taking up his time a quick apology from the rep isnt so much to be expected is it?
but instead you folks seem to think its a better idea to call him an asshole.
the guy you were just appealing to to help make you money is now the guy you're screaming at.
and then you still dont see anything wrong with that, then i'm not going to be able to convince you otherwise. have a great day but just realize that most people arent going to see it your way, or the telemarkerters way.

Bottom line is that I was fine until he mentioned galleries & that set me off. As a Link List owner, I can not fucking stand when people try to push galleries on me.
Had he looked at my referrals, he'd have seen that they all of the sales I've generated came from link-o-rama.com & they are all listed under Pay Sites on the category pages.
So because this ass basically cold called me & did no homework, I'm the ass for getting upset?
And let's not pretend that this little ICQ marketing ploy was not just a way to get personal with your affiliates. You've done this with 400 webmasters? Really? I'm betting that's most, if not all of your affiliates. I base this on my sales rank for this Pay Period that you have posted in the stats area:
Sales Rank: #14
I've sent TWO sales this period.
If your #14 affiliate has 2 sales, you do not have much more than 400 affiliates total. Send a fucking email like everyone else does.
Captain Obvious should have given up when I said no thanks. He should have realized that he was ignorant to my needs as a webmaster when I said that I didn't do that much with galleries.
Hell, according to CaptainObvious, he should have never sent me the 2nd ICQ, since I didn't reply to the 1st one.

Lots of webmasters did two sales with our program, more did one, we have smaller webmasters and bigger webmasters, you're in the middle.
If you think our #1-13 affiliates do 1-2 joins a day each you're straight out wrong.
I don't understand where you guys get the "cold calls" and "telemarketing" bullshit from - I'm not trying to sell you anything, I just wanted to tell you about our new sites.
I don't care if you only have 1 site, I start off with everybody giving them galleries to see where they direct me since MOST webmasters own more than 1 site - you're the ONLY person to turn it into such a big issue.
I'm done here, I have more important things to work on, like I said in the ICQ, don't list the 123 sites on greenguy, I don't give a fuck.

The PROBLEM is your rep's response to that was "don't be an asshole"
THAT is the problem I have. Right away your rep is calling a valued affiliate (all affiliates are valuable IMO) an asshole. Don't you think there's a problem with that??????????????
If Greenguy said hey you're an asshole for contacting me, fuck off Captain still should just say sorry you feel that way. Good bye. Calling affiliates an asshole should NEVER EVER be an okay thing to do. |huh

If an affiliate manger quits there, they are bad reps.
We have many tools to offer so if an affiliate doesn't like one, we can offer them more.

From what I'm reading here, the problem seems fairly obvious (pun intended) - the people who run Metal Cash are a bunch of unbelievably ignorant cunts who don't have enough affiliates to make their program worth running, so they're spending their afternoon here continuing this piss thread in order to draw attention to themselves. A roadkill racoon's ass which as been rotting in the sun for three days would leave a better taste in my mouth than Metal Cash's performance here today.
I've had a few sponsor reps hit me up in the past with nothing more than a "hey there, I'm your rep, let me know if you need anything" and they always know enough to leave me alone when I don't express any interest. Good on 'em. But that CaptainOrifice dude is one dumb fucker. That, or he's just starved or attention. He's a neglected child wandering around looking for hugs. It's all so sad.

This started as "I want to help you" and turned into the "dont be an asshole" remark. Seems somebody missed a few lessons in Basic Customer Service 101. Anybody that worked for me that did that would be out the door immediately.
But the thing that I find the most offensive is Josh coming in and trying to back him up and justify his inexcusable behaviour. If it we me and I was the bos there, I would be coming in trying to clean up the mess that had been made, not jumping in the ring to sling punches myself.
I do run an affiliate program and realize that not only are my affiliates also my customers, they rank right up there as the most important. I just dont see how anybody could miss that. Is it just me??

By the way, the 'warrior' has nothing to do with the way in which I respond to cocksuckers on the board. I chose that name long before I got burned out reading posts by people like you and your little retarded monkeyboy. When people insult me and my program it's offensive and it's like punching me. When someone punches me I don't sit around and do nothing.Fuck you and fuck your little program. The correct thing to do would have been to come here and apologize for hiring an ex used car salesman for an affiliate rep.
All you've managed to do is make more work for assholes like me. Now, every time someone on the board asks what sort of experience we've had with Metal Cash, I have to point them to this thread. That that copying and pasting and can tire me out.

If he were to stop right there, personally I think that's bad repping.1st he is not pushing here, you are he has posted maybe 3 or 4 times on this topic. Everyone else is pushing. You, me and the other members.
After he said he wasn't interested in galleries he offered him links to paysites which he is pushing right now. How is that wrong? The thing I see wrong here is he said he was not interested, even if you were trying to remind him that he is promoing something for you already own it don't matter. He said no thanks. Any smart salesman knows when to back off and come back another day. They surly know not to insult a partner. That's just crazy. Sure GG called the guy an asshole at that point the guy should have just backed off and said sorry to bother you. He made it clear he was having a bad day/night leave him alone. Try again the next day. Maybe try a differant route, e-mail during the day, explain you ment no harm and would like to keep up good business and I bet he would talk it over with you. The guy helps people out and has for sometime, people like that are not assholes but everyone has a breaking point. Thing is a smart salesman knows when to back off and yours did not. Now you are here defending him and your program trying to save face but your not helping. Best advice I can give you now is just let it die man.
I guess I will chime in...
I have run affiliate programs from 1996-3 years ago the 1st of this month. And yes, I have used icq to both offer new sites and programs to existing affiliates and to entice new affiliates. But never, have I been rude to anyone that said no to me. Even if they were rude to me, I apologized for bothering them and moved on. Never, would I ever consider calling an existing affiliate an asshole. That is just bad for business. And, I would have never considered contacting the existing affiliate without knowing everything I could about not only their traffic but also them, personally. Nothing works quite as well as asking about the family. Knowing Greenie the way I do, if your sites worked well for him, he would have jumped all over them and promoted them to death.
The other thing I would have done as the owner of that program would have to come here and to apologize for their employee, not stick up for them.
The problem with Marketing people that don't know how to market is the attitude mentioned earlier. The affiliate is not our customer. While technically that is true, they should still be treated that way. Affiliates are your bread and butter.
And if some of the linklist owners here (and there are a lot), decided to make it a rule, "If you promote MetalCash, you will not be listed", how much do you think that would hurt?
This entire problem started with someone trying to market that really has no idea what they are doing.

He said "no thanks". He was trying to say no, and be nice...
I have some advice for you guys...
If some one says something bad about you, your program, or the people who work for you. Say you are sorry for what ever problem that may have been caused, and that you will fix it, or try to fix it.
Do not go to a webmaster board with tons of people who could be sending you traffic, and making you money. To start talking shit about one of the guys the board is named after.

Do not go to a webmaster board with tons of people who could be sending you traffic, and making you money. To start talking shit about one of the guys the board is named after.Plus, this is THE board for link list owners and free site builders. Out of hundreds of link lists, we all know that there are only about 15-20 lists which control the traffic and, among them, there is only a handful of owners that are well-know and respected. CaptainObvious, not realizing who he was speaking with (as a good rep should), called very possibly the single most respected and influential link list owner an asshole. Just plain bad business.

Lots of webmasters did two sales with our program, more did one, we have smaller webmasters and bigger webmasters, you're in the middle.
If you think our #1-13 affiliates do 1-2 joins a day each you're straight out wrong....
I never said any of that. What I said was that I'm ranked 14th & I've done 2 sales in this pay period (2 weeks). So obviously, 1 thru 13 have 2 or more sales in the last 2 weeks. My comments was that based off your numbers of contacting 400 webmasters by ICQ instead of sending out a newsletter is this: I don't think you have more than 400 webmasters & that a newsletter would have been just fine. I think your little ICQ fest was a way to make all of your affiliates feel special & warm & cozy because you're letting them in on a "secret" I was also attempting to make a jab that if I'm 14th with 2 sales this pay period, then I....well, I'll let others draw their own conclusions :D
...I don't understand where you guys get the "cold calls" and "telemarketing" bullshit from - I'm not trying to sell you anything, I just wanted to tell you about our new sites.
I don't care if you only have 1 site, I start off with everybody giving them galleries to see where they direct me since MOST webmasters own more than 1 site - you're the ONLY person to turn it into such a big issue...If you assume that every webmaster has a TGP, then you are a complete ass & you have no business as a marketing rep. You should have done some homework.
Affiliates are everything right? Everybody knows paysites can't thrive without affiliates! ... Then why even have the program? Close it down if affiliates don't mean that much to you.
I have never once, not once been left alone after I've said "No thanks" to an affiliate manager.
If an affiliate manger quits there, they are bad reps....So because you've been treated with disrespect in the past, you advise your people to treat affiliates with disrespect as well?
...We have many tools to offer so if an affiliate doesn't like one, we can offer them more.So why not start out by saying that instead of assuming that everyone needs galleries?
Obviously neither of you run affiliate programs. To think that the first 10affiliates aren't doing 200+ sales a period each is being oblvious and stupid.Obviously there is a drop, but I doubt it comes right at 10.
When people insult me and my program it's offensive and it's like punching me. When someone punches me I don't sit around and do nothing...Now you know how I felt as soon as CaptainObvious asked me if I wanted some galleries for my script.

Wow, nice to see this thread has taken on a life of it's own. It is also really funny to watch people try to squirm away from the obvious.
Captain Obvious: I think the most obvious thing at play here is that you very likely live in your mom's basement, aren't old enough to get a drink in Vegas, and have the social skills of poorly formed concrete (IE: none). You started uninformed, moved along to rude, stepped through individually insulting and moved right on to insulting pretty much all potential affiliates for the program. I would have to say that Josh is getting good value for money here, provided you are paying him.
Your name calling insulting "asshole" and "asshat" might not raise an eyebrow over at go fark thyself, but here you are pretty much done, reduced to the level of unamusing child banging the back of my seat on an airplane.
Josh, let me give you a business tip: When your "staff" starts calling your affiliates names, the best choice usually is to come in, explain that your new affiliate guy is, well, uncultured, and apologize for his potty mouth. Coming here and standing behind his insults and rude behavior and adding your own on the top tells me that the captain learned his affiliate skills from you. Sadly, you had no skill, so he learned nothing.
I am totally shocked that I can type metalcash without it being turned into ******** at this point.
Metalcash sites go off my acceptable program lists as well.

Given the history, this thread isn't really so surprising now. This team lives and dies by skirting the edges, then simply shutting down when too many bad decisions mount up. The good news is...with the kind of business savvy displayed here...they very likely won't be around long.

Maybe we need a minimum age requirement. Not just for posting here, but for being an adult webmaster. Or at least for running paysites and affiliate programs.
Then again, maybe we just need a test.
Something like "draw lines to connect the webmaster names on the right-hand column with the websites they own in the left-hand column."

You try something to increase the traffic and the next few days watch it like a hawk only to see it's not really doing what you had hoped and now you have to come up with a new plan. I agree with Sir Moby. This does say it all :) When you work with "the public", be it paying customers, affiliates, or just people, you should never be rude to them, no matter how annoying they are. "He started it", is something I hear from my kids at home (2 and 4 years old) and has no place when you do business.
Sometimes it's not easy sitting on our hands and not typing back what we think. Bottom line though, whether you're a sponsor rep, a moderator on a board or "just a webmaster", it's best not to be rude and aggressive. Just doesn't reflect well on your business.
