View Full Version : AVNADS.COM and Adbrite: Fusker buddies

I was hoping that someone from AVN, avn online, avn.com teddy communications or whoever like aly or whoever might want to drop in and discuss this program. I would like to know if avn is involved in this project, and if so, why do they support and pay "webmasters" who use the hotlink model as the basis of thier business?

Avn, fusker, Philip Kaplan, fuckedcompany.com, adbrite.com... all sleeping in the same bed, I am starting to think.

Hello, AVN? Hello?

Just got fuskerd last night for the second time, last time they removed us when I asked them in a few hours after I sent the email. It's been about a year since it happen, so the “black list” I was told my URL was going to be on must have expired.

So far no reply from last night.

My question is, if they have so much traffic that is burning the fuck out of my BW, why not join my affiliate site and make some $?

RawAlex

Because there isn't any money in it for them... Fusker's clients are mostly either total sponges (won't ever pay for porn), people without credit cards, or minors. In all of those cases, links to a program that needs them to pay is worthless.

Fusker is the sort of thing that makes TGP traffic look good.

Why AVNads would want to be involved in this is beyond me. I hope someone from AVN can pop over and explain it a little better - or explain that it isn't their program at all.

I am also very curious about this relationsip between AVN and these Fusker thiefs. The "Your Ad Here" links on http://fusker.lewww.com/ all redirect to AVNads.com (same admin contact as AVNonline.com).

WTF is going on here??

Hey guys... AVNADs is a relatively new project where we're working in partnership with AdBrite. The people involved are still ironing out the kinks and allowing fusker.com in the network is, in my opinion, one of those kinks. I'm meeting with the publisher later today to sort this out. Please do email me aly@avn.com if you have other concerns with anything AVN is involved in. Thanks!

Hi Aly |waves|

Barron - if you don't have htaccess in place, fusker (and others) can basically load your images on their site, costing them nothing & you pay all the bandwidth.

Yes, Barron, what GreenGuy said... It's not good, and I certainly don't want to see anyone I'm involved with 'endorsing' this type of thing.

It truly saddens me to see a legitmate program get itself entangled with the likes of Fusker. Fusker is criminal. It is raw, unadulterated thievery. Those who host fuskers, advertise on fuskers, or simply ignore the impact that fuskers have on the common webmaster should have their little hairy assholes fuskered with an antique Kirby vacuum. You could strip paint with one of those babies.

I am curious, when AVN penned the deal, did they not know about adbrite and fusker? And if they didn't, they really didn't do their homework. That is assuming that this practice is not condoned by AVN. To me, that is a huge assumption.

RawAlex

Aly, I trust that someone within AVN will not only look at the situation specific to fusker, but also look at the the way that adbrite has responded whent he subject of fusker and similar sites have come up:

I asked them if sites like http://fusker.lewww.com/ were compliant with their terms because they are stealing bandwidth from other people who are ignorant about hotlinking. This was their reply:

"Thanks for writing and welcome to AdBrite! I appreciate your concern about http://fusker.lewww.com/ and other Fusker sites. These sites operate in full compliance with AdBrite’s Terms of Service and all US state and federal laws, but they can certainly be a nuisance to adult Web masters. If you’re concerned that any AdBrite publisher is driving up your hosting costs or otherwise interfering with your service, I’d be happy to help you prevent this. Please let me know if you are not already familiar with the steps you can take to keep your content from being hot-linked."

MY reply back to them:
"I know how to prevent hotlinking. The point is a lot of other people do not and it can cost them hundreds of dollars monthly. If you allow sites that are stealing from other people great, I'll set up a phishing site and put AdBrite banners all over it. Then maybe you can leave my banners up and just tell my victims "I can help you prevent phishing"."

(as posted by JenC in this thread: http://www.greenguysboard.com/board/showthread.php?t=17640 )

it would seem that AVN's business partner in this deal doesn't have any problem making money from people willing to steal, which maked me wonder how long it will be before he finds some way to stiff AVN as well.

If they aren't honest on the surface, they aren't honest where you can't see them.

Aly, condoned and turning a blind eye are two shades of the same thing. AVN's partner in this project (Philip Kaplan, aka PUD) is well known for less than honest ways to grow his business and make money. His response to the issue as quoted above shows that he truly doesn't give a rat's ass about anything than making money.

I think it truly funny that some of the biggest AVN supporters are getting "fuskered" at this very minute... and AVN appears to be paying for it to happen.

AVN has shown that money is the only thing that counts when making business decisions time and time again. You are probably too young in this business to remember but, when AVN took over the shows, everyone was pissed. They just knew that the shows were going to become "only" about money. And I'll be damned if they didn't. Damn, Aly, it was a lot easier when you were with Python. Why the hell would you ever crawl into bed with these people? To me, you and AVN are like oil and water.

I guess AVN can prove me wrong by not doing business with the likes of Philip Kaplan. When do you suppose that announcement will be made?

I'm doing my best!

And Jim, I do remember when AVN took over the shows (I started with Python at the beginning of '99) The reason I'm here at all is that, like you, I recognized where AVN needed serious improvement. This is a good (at times) challenge for me. I see great potential in turning this negative perception around, but it requires the time to educate people on both sides. AVN/ Internext once had the luxury of sitting back and taking orders; of course that not only isn't the case anymore, but also left some people with a bad taste in their mouth. The funny thing is, people tend to give the folks at AVN far too much credit for being evil, malicious or aggressively complacent in some way... I actually came in here facing the possibility of that reality... but as it turns out, they're all really very nice, just rather cut-off from their audience on the marketing/ PR side of things.

What ISN'T so funny is suddenly facing a PR fiasco like this...! However, I do actually like the fact that I'm in a position to do something about it... 1 step at a time...

I really am sure you will do your best. And, I really don't think AVN is dishonest. They just have to come to a balance between having everything about money and maybe, caring a little for the webmasters and show a little good faith. It's this fusker thing now but even before that, and I sound like a broken record, but...Florida in August. Is there any cheaper venue in the US than Florida in August?

Hi,

Pud here, the owner and founder of AdBrite, which also powers AVN Ads.

We are removing the site in question, http://fusker.lewww.com/

Neither AVN nor I was aware of the Fusker problem until we found this thread.

One of the features of AdBrite is that anyone can use it as a tool to sell ads. There are currently 3,600+ sites using AdBrite. In much the same way that Ebay doesn't review each auction before it goes live, we don’t review each site.

That said, thanks for bringing this to our attention. I have informed our customer service rep who wrote the quoted response above that he should inform me immediately next time something like this happens, so we can manually review any site in question. If that still doesn’t do the trick, perhaps we will start reviewing each site before allowing them to use AdBrite.

Rock on,
Philip (pud)

Aly, having the power to fix (or at least influence the fix) to an issue is a good feeling. Similarly, I can tell you it is as good a feeling to be able to know WHO to ask to find the person who has the power to make the fix. I call you out here because, well, I know that if you can't fix it, you will know who can fix it.

Pud, it is also good to see you here, if for no other reason that you now know that there are many angles to the adult side of the internet that you haven't considered before. Hotlinking, stealing content, and misrepresentation is a major issue that needs you constant attention, and your customer service and pr people need to be WAY more sensitive to the issues at hand. If someone is willing to screw someone else out of money, trust me, they will screw you out of it too.

I would suggest that you start your people on a quest looking for refering pages with things like "fusker" and "fukser" and similar in the names to see who else is taking you for a ride... and I would highly recommend that with only 3600 sites, that you take the time to look at the bigger accounts to be sure you aren't paying people to steal from others.

thanks to everyone for making an effort... now I hope that other major programs take similar actions where needed.

There is a feature you can add to htaccess that shows an alternate image if you try to hotlink the file.

You can use this to show goatse, tubgirl or the most disgusting image I can find

You could also use a image with the writing "visit www.xyz.com for more"

http://www.htaccesstools.com/hotlink-protection/
It's under Blocked Image URL

I use this sometimes to fuck the users of fusker.lewww.com, so they get a picture of a penis cut in half rather than my pics :)

RawAlex
2005-03-22, 11:41 PM
fireorange, the problem with that solution (if you block all accesses to images) is that you also block yahoo and google image systems, which can be good sources of traffic. I have been much more selective in blocking fusker sites, rather than blocking all access.

Pictures of tubgirl, sexually transmitted diseases, and such are all good ones to keep their productivity up....

I am hoping that content producers start taking action for copyright violation and shut this crap down once and for all.

Interesting thread.

I just went to adbrite.com and skimmed through their TOS and found this..

5. RESTRICTIONS. Subscriber (whether a publisher,
advertiser or otherwise) warrants, represents and
agrees that it will not contribute, submit or make
available through the Services, or use the Services in
connection with, any Content that is infringing,
libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, abusive,
offensive or otherwise violates any law or right of
any third party.

Have their TOS always read this way, or is this something new due to fusker?

pud - perhaps reviewing the sites is a good idea. If anybody and everybody can get an account and nobody checks anything then what's to stop CP, warez, beastiality, etc.. type sites from flying your ads and making money too?

In any case, I glad to see that you've agreed to take a stand against these thieves.

As much as it is important for everyone to be educated on how to block leaches, the point being made here is, we shouldn't have to. And we certainly shouldn't have to lay back and accept that one of our own is paying someone to leach off of us.

Imagine a neighbor that you don't like is stealing tools from your garage. Then imagine that a friend of yours is buying those tools from him, knowing damn well that those were your tools.

I'm just glad to see that fusker was removed from the adbrite system. I spend quite a bit of money with adbrite and it bothered me that a site like fusker was one of the higher-traffic sites in their listings. I recommend highly that adbrite take a few moments to run a grep on their serverlogs and look for refers from fusker. it isn't enough to just take down the single site that was named. A proactive approach to stopping bandwidth theft and copyright infringement is an important part of an honest and upfront business.

Email sent to pud and Aly again, there is a list of sites on the front of fusker, all which appear to use adbrite. it would appear that adbrite is the default advertising system installed when a new version of fusker is sold ($100 per copy, and you have to keep the ads on the page!).

I am starting to wonder if there is a more clear partnership arrangement here.

Hi all! Certaintly wish that my first post on this board was...well...not having to deal with shady Affiliates, but I do GREATLY appreciate Urb and cb34 giving me a head's up.

HOWEVER...thanks to your vigilance, and because of hot linking, as of today we will no longer make payments on any

Ami, go to see you around, and congrats on taking the most important step: Stop paying thieves. That goes a long way to solving the issue.

I would highly recommend to all programs out there to take a few moments and have someone grep your referal logs for the last 24 hours and look for terms like "fusker" and fukster" and other similar things. You don't want to accidentally be providing payouts and financial support to people who's only goal is to steal bandwidth and violate copyright in a major manner.

I think I am going to start a list of domains with fusker on it, so that programs can move to get rid of these losers once and for all.

adbrite/avnads is a good network for advertising and i have used them for many campaigns. and every advertiser on there is solid except fusker. i have used many. but fusker.lewww.com is probably the only one on there. if you check their stats. they are at 3million page views a day. and yes they have hit my server and almost put it in the ground where i couldnt even log in load averages went up to 600. but there is a lot of good sites on adbrite/avnads. but the fuskers are the evilones.

Not protecting your images with .htaccess is like going on vacation and leaving your doors unlocked. Is it wrong if your house gets robbed...Yes. Should you be surprised...No.

It is so easy to protect your images and render Fusker and the hotlinking menace dead in its tracks.

Altheon: the action recommended to stop hotlinkers (the basic one) means that I must also limit my business by not allowing google or yahoo image bots onto my sites. That means I lose traffic and exposure.

Even if the door is unlocked, you are still a thief when you walk in and steal something. Paying someone to steal something isn't exactly a legal business.

AVN and SugarDVD are smart... let's see if others follow.

Alex

PS: Hopefully adbrite, pud, and the avn people will be smart enough to filter off ALL of the fusker sites... this is starting to make me think of "cancelling" a spammer's account.

HOWEVER...thanks to your vigilance, and because of hot linking, as of today we will no longer make payments on any
traffic sent to our site from http://fusker.lewww.com/index.php?offset=30.

However, I would think it better if ami arranged with the program to first send those hits to a "account closed because he is a thief" page, with a "click here to continue on for DVDs" link.

RawAlex

Yes, the text link does - but that is only because sugardvd doesn't control the html on the page (not like adbrite, which controls the content). Just like any other sponsor you have can't pull a banner even if they close your account.

I don't understand how sites like fusker and boobdex manage to stay online. Whenever they violate someone's copyright, that person can send a DMCA notice to say.. fuskers ISP and that ISP's ISP. Even if they promptly remove the illegal content and file a counter-notice, the law requires that the ISP take them down for ten business days. It seems like they'd be down just about all the time since their whole business model is based on violating copyrights. Are they hosted in countries that don't care about copyright law?

cd34
2005-03-27, 02:22 PM
A DCMA complaint needs to come from the copyright holder -- or an authorized agent. That itself becomes difficult. I can look at some content and say, hey, I know that is copyrighted, but, how do you find the copyright holder? You end up finding the original site that is being hotlinked, locate the gallery, guess whether that gallery is content that the webmaster paid for or is sponsor provided content.

But, you are right, it is the right way to do it -- and requires the vigilence of someone that has been hotlinked that can file that paperwork. I've been documenting it for a few clients so that they can file. It will be interesting.

I hope you are not right. I am going to once again ask Aly to put in an appearance and see what the scoop is. Adbrite is rife with sites that are WAY less than desirable as ad space, providing income sources for all sorts of VERY marginal stuff. I am NOT impressed.

I also hope that sugardvd figures out how to put up an "account died" message before their site, so that people know they are coming from a scumbag.

You know, I have waffled on this issue for years. On one hand, I agree, I think the site should just not accept the traffic.

But, I also think that it adds extra sting to the wounds of a terminated webmaster when they continue to accept that traffic and make money off of it.

Ask any webmaster that was terminated for fraud which they would hate more.... then lets do that. :)

Yep, gotcha there, what I was worried about was the wording in Ami's post that stated hits from that one page would not be paid out on, rather than the entire domain, which has their text link on. Just wanted to clear up what their position is, as I felt it a bit ambiguous. :)

I am curious, when AVN penned the deal, did they not know about adbrite and fusker? And if they didn't, they really didn't do their homework. That is assuming that this practice is not condoned by AVN. To me, that is a huge assumption.
Maybe they will do a nice full page puff piece on them like they did with Teleterria.

Hey Guys,

Just heard about this thread. We do business with adbrite/avnonline. We did have links on fusker and they are now pulled.
I have informed adbrite that they need to remove fusker from their list of publishers before we will do further buisness with them. The last time I informed them that one of their publishers was shady they removed them quickly.
I am checking to see if fusker does indeed have an affilaite account with us. If they do, it will be cut.
We will not do buisness with fusker or anybody doing biz with them.

Boogie, one thing I learned long ago in this business: Until people complain, most programs don't give a rats ass WHERE the traffic comes from. I am sure many of them woudl take toolbar redirections of disney and nickleodeon traffic provided they could find some fool to buy it.

AVNads and Adbrite are doing what is traditionally done: When someone bitches, take action. Until then, DO NOTHING. I don't think it is willful blindness, just a "don't care" attitude until someone turns up the heat - and even then, adbrite's original response was classic "it's not our problem, buy a bigger door lock" stuff.

I am hoping that other programs see the level of frustration that exists with these fusker sites, and move to block them within their T&C and in reality.

LOL, it was posted here before that all new fuskers come with adbrite by default when they are purchased.
That tells me adbrite and fusker signed a very hefty deal together.
That tells me adbrite was full of shit when they came in here saying they are against fuskers and be diligent in cleaning fuskers out of adbrite, pretty difficult when they are in a partnership with them.
It also tells me AVN was full of shit when they come in here and say they are against fuskers with all the evidence presented they are still in partnership with the devil.

ONLY way to stop it is to Boycott AVN and any one else that has anything to do with Fuskers until they truly stop dealing with them in partnerships.
