View Full Version : Sig Whores, What Do You Think?
In my travels to other boards, I see an awful lot of sig whores. We are lucky enough to not see many here and when we do, we get rid of them quickly. So, for the boards, do you think these whores help or hurt? For the programs they promote, do sponsors actually make any money from people that only post a few words to get their sig seen? And for the whores, is this their only business? Are they really making a living by posting 100s of times/day on boards?

I know someone who at gfy has referred over 300 webmasters from his gfy sig alone - ofcourse that is an enormous amount of posting but it is a fact that continual board whoring will get people to click on your sig - assuming it is interesting enuf to click on ofcourse. Do people make money on their sigs? HELL YEAH. Is it enuf to live on? i think that depends, it is all relative imo
Unfortunatly for the people that use the boards to network professionally and gather information these 'board whores' definatly fuck it for the rest of us as we have to read thru so much shit to find anything worthwhile
just my opinion and thank fuck you guys have the sig rules

Sig whores are just as bad being a spammer imo. You have these "characters" who contribute nothing meaningful to the board and post so often you have to wonder if they are really webmasters at all. Whats worse is these other board owners who encourage it by paying nickels for every post in an attempt to be the most "active" board. Sad, really. |angry|

you havent got enought spam yet lol
I totally agree however
Consider that "JuicyLinks" guy from gfy - everyone has seen that guy posting - and I dont know about you lot but everytime I have seen a post from that guy it has been a couple of lines of complete shit and then a pic of himself followed by his 600 pixel high sig - it is completely and utterly insane
how about the guys with 500k sig files?
Yes thats right, I have seen with my own eyes at least a dozen guys with sigs that are 500k to 1meg in size
madness
So, who do you guys think is the worse whore of all time? :)
Everyone needs to make money somehow.
I have a bit more respect for sig whores then the bums panhandling at the corner 7/11.
Then again I have no use for GFY and never go over there.
Simply put 'sigwhores' are a huge asset to a board. The more posts, the more popular a board seems, and the more people visit it. While I hate the idea of 'sigwhores' or 'postwhores' ..... unfortunately thats the model that seems to work.

LB - I have to disagree. The popularity of a board is sort like traffic and we all know that quantity does not equal quality.
SigWhores suck ass IMHO. They do nothing to contribute to the community & are only there to leech of the "popularity" of the board.
We could easily be on the top of the list by letting every Tom, Dick & Harry post whatever mindless topic spewed into their heads.
But I like being #6 :D
I think this board (and a few others that have legit rules) are a much better place to get business done, get straight answers to legit questions, bounce ideas off each other, etc.
Greenguy & Jim is #6 on Boardtracker without sigwhores and without paid posting.
IMO that speaks volumes.

Our definition of a Sig Whore is one (male or female) who posts for the sake of posting & getting their sig file seen.
We have a few, but they tend to get picked on & either leave or are banned :D

I don't visit boards that allow large or annoying sigs. If I'm trying to read text and I see a large animating flash advert only a few pixels below what I'm reading I get distracted. If I see 20 of them I go nutty. Then I come back here.
Not allowing large obtrusive adverts also cuts down on the type of people who would abuse them - forum spammers, including those who consistantly only contribute to discussions using the words 'awesome', 'lol', and other insightful single-word remarks.
Some boards look like dirty webmaster whore houses. This one has class.
(I realize my sig is slightly annoying so I'm moving it down this page until I find a better one)

Now ... I totally agree with your reasoning, however sigwhores (posters who really only add non-business discussions mostly) increase the activity in a board.
When you have an increase in activity you attract more regular contributors, and your visitors vist more frequently.
Eg, i can look at GG&J 2 times a week and take in all the discussions and threads quite easily. You get me hitting your forum twice and only seeing 2 sets of banners etc etc. I hit netpond constantly, and its not because there is more business related content ... but because its always moving.
I just believe sigwhores are a necessary evil. :)

Back when I did frequent a certain three-letter board, I surfed with sigs turned off, the whoring was so bad. At the time there was enough decent content to make a visit worthwhile. Now, that is not the case (IMO). Whether the proliferation of sig-whores contributed, I'll leave to you, gentle reader, to decide.
PS - see...naw, I won't go there. I'm too busy whoring for a custom title and a Buddy Christ. ;)
There's also something else to consider on the three letter board. Post count = "respectability" on that board. If you don't have a large post count you're a newbie and anything you say is basically ignored and/or challenged. So I think "serious webmasters" starting out pretty much have to start as post/sig whores to be taken seriously later.

Being new to the board, and adult boards in general, i must say that sponsor referal links in sig files are a great resource. I am happy to use them and hopefuly send a fellow webmaster a commish.
But I can be slightly selective in who's sig i click on. People who have been helpfull or at least nice in responding to my posts will likely get a click when im looking for new sponsors. Or others i see posting often and contributing good stuff in other discussions.
The sig whores probably have a very low conversion ratio from posting to boards, unless of coarse those scummy buisness practices attract more scummy webmasters. meanwhile us honest business people tend to stick with those that practice good honest business practices.
my two cents.

When you have an increase in activity you attract more regular contributors, and your visitors vist more frequently...I know what your saying & I think we accomplish that by having the Chit Chat (http://www.greenguysboard.com/board/forumdisplay.php?f=12) forum, but part of the problem is that I think we are the only board that at least tries to separate the business from the bullshit & a lot of people have a problem grasping that concept.
I like having the variety of categories here, but most people that are new to the board just default themselves to this forum without poking around a bit 1st, which is why we see these Sig Whores annoying us from time to time.

There's also something else to consider on the three letter board. Post count = "respectability" on that board...That's true for every board, this one included. Unless you know the name of the poster before they came over here, most people automatically assume that the poster is a "newbie" (myself included)
I do think that the good part about this board (and a few others) is that legit webmasters with legit questions will get legit answers, regardless of post count :)

IMO sigwhores have been around since YNOT... difference is the good ones back then enjoyed a good success rate while the ones today folks generally just find annoying.
People in general resist change, just because we make our living from this new communication vehicle doesn't mean we are immune to this. Upgrades, patches... few look forward to those potentially hairpulling delights. Over the years have seen gripes about SEO changes, consoles, TGPs, email spam and more; yet all of those things are still with us dispite being unpopular with some people.
The sigwhore issue shares a commonality with those things above; someone is making money off it. When value of the return outweighs the cost will see a change because quest for the dollar seems to cancel out that natural resistance to change quite well.

I think the idea here - and why we all agree this board is best for business - is that there is not mad activity from soem guy posting 10 ' would you hit it threads' - if we want to see 'activity' as you call it we will head on over to gfy and join in the crap

My personal feeling about sig whores is that they need to find something constructive to do. Okay sure, some of them get paid, but overall I'd say that's probably not the case.
I know Greenie and a few others from way back and assume they know I'm not a newb, but if anyone else does... oh well. Post counts be damned! :)
I've been around this biz long enough to know that I can find better uses for my limited time than posting when I don't have an absolute need to do so, and I'm very selective about the threads I respond to. I'm a single mom working a full-time day job and raising a 16-year-old in addition to slinging porn... I barely have time to read the board a couple of times a week, let alone post a bunch of times about things that have nothing to do with me or my business.
I don't read other boards anymore. I can get everything I need, both business and entertainment, right here... and I don't have to deal with all the annoying BS in the process, which makes me a very happy wench indeed |pink

Sigs are a wonderful place for small, controlled advertising, as it is done here, as well as exposing one's personality. Sigs are a good thing, but the people who post only to expose their sig to a few more eyes are a menace to the community. You know the saying, "If you can't be good, be funny. If you can't be good or funny, make sure you have a big cock"? Sig whores aren't good or funny and they have unusually small penises.

To combat the sigswap programs and sponsors who refuse to advertise on message boards and run scammy fucking sig shit to get around advertising we just made a compeition
Every person that runs our sponsors sigs is elgible to win a piece of about a thosuand bucks each month, so allthough we couldnt beat the sigwhores we now have about 150 of our own signwhores that run our board sponsors sigs exclusively.

Everyone else even they have a big sig are not a sig whore.
Sigwhores are a means of marketing for many sponsors.
Without sigwhores, some sponsors wouldn't be in existance, because some sponsors simply did not have the marketing capital necessary for a full-blown marketing campaign.
It's the ones you don't pick as sig whores who generate the most money I bet. 1 person who posts here occassionally told me they were getting 600/mth for their sig spot at one stage... and I would have never picked their posts as "whoring"
And to put this in perspective Jim... it's This Board that's weird!! Most boards treat sig space as a posters right.. and would prefer anything to a lack of posts! :D
RawAlex
2005-03-11, 11:15 PM
In the long run for a board owner, sig whores lower the overall REAL value of advertising, as the sheer number of banners and link offs per page takes away chances for people to click the paid ads. That an individual with a posting bot (or no life) can run up 50,000 or more posts in a year is telling.
GFY as a board has left hundreds of thousands of dollars of revenue on the table by not better controlling the sigs. I think that the advertisers likely get a much poorer return on money as a result. The whole sigwhore industry basically has created the job title "post whore", most programs have at least one (and maybe more) people who's only job it is to cruise around the boards and get that sig up there, showing the flag as often as possible. 8 hours a day of "that sounds like a good idea, you might like our program too". I am sure that many programs find that paying a real person to do this is cheaper than paying for advertising on some of the more expensive (and less focused) boards.
Another factor on this board is that non-business chatting is limited to one area, and as such, doesn't get the sheer number of views that it might get on a single section board. Sig whores will find it very unprofitable to spend much time around here. Only people who come in with the desire to chat, add to the dicussions, and chat about their products are able to get the exposure. I won't mention names, but those people who do it well are not only selling to us, but have become part of the local landscape.
Pure sigwhores, the nobodies selling their sigline to the highest bidders are the static of chatboards... all noise, no signal.

I don't think the board owners have a big problem with other people making some money off of sigs. If that was the case they'd disable them or add their own custom sig at the end of each message you or I post. They realize its a slight incentive for the board users to post more which in turn attracts them more sponsors. It's only when some asshat decides they are going to post useless shit does it become a pain in the ass and devalues the board for everyone.

You have to look at it another way - Sig Whores, for the most part, contribute NOTHING to the board. So, in essence, they make money for free.
Legit posters that ask & answer questions & are here to help & contribute the community are sort of rewarded for their posts by whatever money they make off their sigs.
Believe me when I say, if something works out to where money is not that big of an issue, I'd fucking LOVE to have a board with no ads & no sigs :D
Just webmasters helping webmasters, instead of money driving both sides of the board.

OK - here's where I get into trouble. :)
I'm a high count poster on a couple of other boards, and I treat my sig as just another resource. It's the same as adding a webmaster link to a portal. Despite my high post counts, I don't think of myself as a sig whore - I'm more of a loose mouth and a nosey bastard.
I'm just starting to rethink my sig policy. What do you think of my new "Big Sig"? I registered the domain www.BigSig.com to provide tips and handy links for webmasters, as well as promoting some revenue earning sites.
Hopefully it's within the rules, but if GG&J don't like it, I'm happy to switch back to text lines.
I have no problem with people that make money from their sigs as long as they do contribute to the discussion. Here, a quick example of what I consider a sig whore. I have removed the names to protect the guilty. And, the service I am getting this from truncates posts. But, even truncated, this posters posts, fit :) The first line is the thread title, the second is the response.
This is just a small sampling

IMHO, the majority of "sig whores" continously post loads of garbage, polluting the threads with noise, and they rarely contribute with anything of benefit for others than themselves.
Like when you find an interesting thread, you must browse through 90% garbage in order to filter the relevant postings - WASTE of time.
One of the main reasons why I rarely spend my time on webmaster boards that allow this kind of shit. Time is money.

Simply put 'sigwhores' are a huge asset to a board. The more posts, the more popular a board seems, and the more people visit it. While I hate the idea of 'sigwhores' or 'postwhores' ..... unfortunately thats the model that seems to work. That's an interesting though becasue I visit 5 or 6 boards daily and none of them allow sig whores.
Isn't using sig whores to make a board seem more popular is kind of like using CJ2 to make a TGP seem more popular?
A few people posting only to get their sig out may be a good thing but the bulk of board needs to have something real to get my time.

People seem to be obsessed with post counts. Several times people say that if you've got a high post count, then you can't be a successful webmaster. I think that a more interesting measure is the number of views per post that your threads get. That's a much better indication of your value (or the appeal of your boob pics :).
Board Marketers are fine and dandy... it's not a dirty word. They generally just can't understand that even the most regular regulars here don't overtly "whore" their own products in sigs or posts.. out of respect for the people that pay for that exclusive privilage.
Doesn't mean any less networking or business gets done.. it just doesnt get done at the expense of the sponsors who contribute the dollars this show requires.
It means there is no need for the paying advertisers to be rammed down our throats as well, it's hard to argue against the policy here on any level really. (apart from making the board look smaller than it is on boardtracker's toplist)

While that may be true, in all honestly, what the fuck do I care about non board sponsors?
You have to look at it another way - Sig Whores, for the most part, contribute NOTHING to the board. So, in essence, they make money for free.
Legit posters that ask & answer questions & are here to help & contribute the community are sort of rewarded for their posts by whatever money they make off their sigs.
Believe me when I say, if something works out to where money is not that big of an issue, I'd fucking LOVE to have a board with no ads & no sigs :D
Just webmasters helping webmasters, instead of money driving both sides of the board.
I understand...hit me up bro, i would like to support the board with some type of banner ad...or do you know Bonnie Moss?

What I tell you about sticking your nose in board business? You are just a pretty face :)
There is a link on the top of the board for those that want to advertise.

Here's my two cents. I think each board has it's good points. I like this one because of the way it separates the business from the chit chat. And that's what makes the posts in the chit chat section not sig whore posts like they might be on other boards. I like GFY for what it is. A place to meet people, find sponsors, entertainment, and sig whore. Plus read the posts from the self promoting, lipstick wearing goofbag called Juicy Links. :D

I AM A SIGWHORE! But not here. In fact, I own gfysigwhore.com :) lol
I have to agree with you on some points;
Sigwhores suck ass. Sigwhores get paid for quantity, not quality. We have to make massive amounts of posts in order to generate a significant income; unless you're Samuel Clemens it's almost impossibel to make 1000-3000 posts per month and still seem like an intelligent human being.
I try to be entertaining, but income has to come first. I am very grateful to TCG for the opportunity they've given me (again, they don't pay me for posting here, all I get is the refcode in my sig). The extra income is helping me and my family through a very rough time.
Still, I'm making a real effort to generate enough income from my webmastering that I'll no longer have to whore fulltime.
Is it bad for the boards? I don't think it's BAD, if it's limited. Uncontrolled whoring can be an ugly thing. It may have SOME positive impact if it's not overdone.
Is it good for the sponsors? It must be, they keep paying.
But still... when I need REAL information I come to greenguysboard.com! Which reminds me, I came here to ask about promoting Indian sites. In another thread.

1,000 per month isn't that difficult if you're the sort of person that has an opinion on everything. :)

I'm starting to think that boards that allow Sig Whores are a lot like CJ sites - sure, there's some good links/info in there, but I'll be damned that every other link is bull shit :D

I've got the open mind. :)
I also like to ask questions if I don't understand anything. I also found out that it's sometimes better to state a position even if you don't actually believe in it. People are often more informative when they are being destructive than when they are being helpful.

but do you post just to sell your submit passes?
I know he doesn't but even if he did, it wouldn't matter. A sig whore is one that posts just for the sake of having this sig seen. There is no thought behind the post and it contributes nothing to the conversation.
Boards that allow it, are really whores themselves.

Good question Jim, and I only read your initial post on this.
As you know I run a board myself. I chase away the sig whores and the freeloading contest whores all the time. No excessive contests and absolutely no token system in place. It just attracts the wrong kind of webmaster.
I could care less if my board is slower due to the fact there is no post whoring or drama going on. Quality over quantity.

Oh yeah - I almost forgot about this. This should be a good sign of how bad things are around here as far as sig whores & people that can't be bothered to read our sig rules.
We had Sparky do some custom work to the board - one this is a page that displays all the sigs that are over 80 characters - I went thru it last night & "corrected" about 50 sig files.
The other is a little button next to the poster that only our mods can see - now if they see a bad sig file, a simple click corrects the problem.
Thank |buddy| Sparky works for slave wages :D

I don't really know a lot about this... but as a person that went looking to hire one, I can guarantee you quantity wasnt what I was looking for... was looking for soemone who was a known regular at a coulple of boards.. that made a useful informative posts.. Imho webmasters make a point of clicking the sigs of interesting people.. to find out more about the person, I do at very least.
(PS.. I didn't want to pay the prices needed to get the spot with either of the 2 suitable people that I did run across btw. 500-600/mth)
As I mentioned tonight on the radio show
First person that gets me $5k, gets my sig for the month of April :)
I sell mine for 6k, I post more then Jim.
I'll sell mine for $7k
It generated more traffic/controversy than either of yours. haha

It's interesting that many people seem to consider posting volumes as a measure of the success of a sig whore. For banner impressions, the guy that gets to the top of page two as well as having a post early on page one, is more valuable than the guy with 4 posts on page 1 - or have I misunderstood the concept of branding?

In the case of that Butcher thread that grew to the size of a book i read maybe the first two pages, waited a week or two, then read the last two pages of comments. I skipped everything in between.
