View Full Version : Hosted Free Sites - Sponsors Read This

So that we get this all in one post and hopefully take some of the mystery out of what is meant by Hosted Free Sites and their benefits - here goes.

A hosted free site is very similar to a hosted free gallery that you provide to your TGP affiliates to put in their TGPs with their own affiliate code - it is never used (or at least should not be) by regular gallery builders to submit to a TGP, as in every case of TGP owners I know they would never accept them.

The difference with a hosted free site is that you are providing that little free site to the Link List owners to list on their lists - again it would never be accepted as a submission from a free site submitter.

If you would like to see a list of at least 21 sponsors that are already providing these hosted free sites - http://www.greenguysboard.com/resources/sponsors/database.html and click on the header that says "sites" which will put the sponsors that offer them at the top in that column.

A hosted free site is very simple to build - it consists of 4 pages total - each page would have three advertising spots for your paysites - text or banners or combo - and is merely a warning page, a "main" page and two galleries.

The warning page can have advertisements and should be the first major attempt to get the surfer to your paysite - of course should have a warning, and then a large "ENTER" towards the bottom of the page.
The main page again can have three ads, and the two links to the two galleries
The two galleries can easily be two of your "matching content" premade hosted free galleries - so most of the work is already done if you use galleries.

Why provide hosted free sites when I already offer hosted free galleries?

Take a look at the traffic you get to hosted free galleries - just use the raw/uniques and figure out your ratio of freeloaders to buyers - if my numbers on my TGPs are normal, which I believe they are, you should be getting around 1:1300 at best for hosted free galleries.

Now take that hosted free site that is well written and has quality content, put it on a Link List and, again from my own numbers, you should see way under 1:100 conversions (normally around 1:30).

Why the big difference?

Most Link Lists provide pretty highly targetted Search Engine traffic and trusted bookmarkers, wheras TGPs (in most cases) are running traffic trades and CJ to get their traffic numbers high.

Now think about the bandwidth that you are burning for the TGP galleries and think about the cost of a hosted free site design compared to a hosted free gallery (a quality hosted free site goes somewhere around average $30 each in batch purchases)

With tons of good Link Lists out here that have some good quality traffic (given its not the same as TGP trafic - but then neither is the quality) it doesn't make economical sense to not use the hosted free sites.

If you have any questions about this and dont feel comfortable posting the questions, PM myself, MrMaryLou or Greenguy and we'd be glad to explain it further.

BRAVO Linkster! BRAV-FUCKING-O!

|flowers| |roses| |yourock

I will add that I think a lot of webmasters - both those that run affiliate programs as well as general everyday webmasters - think that the amount of traffic that you have equals the amount of money you're making, and most of us around here know that this is NOT the case.

Link Lists, in general, have a lot less traffic than TGPs. A LOT LESS. But, as Linkster said, we have very loyal surfers & we filter the fuck out of them. Some of the biggest TGP's out there don't even have categories, but most Link Lists have realized that if you want to send niche specific traffic to the sites & sponsors that are listed, you have to sort things out as much as possible. My Gay Twink category gets fuck all for traffic as far as "big" numbers go, but I'd bet that 99.44% of the surfers on there are looking for Gay Twink sites.

Link Lists are going to always be here - we're probably going to always have less traffic, but we're also going to always have better traffic & we should be catered to just a bit more :D

One other source of traffic I didnt mention as I really didnt want to confuse the issue too much:
The WMs that are out there submitting free sites to Link Lists (at least the ones that are doing a good sales job) also all have some sort of fake linklist or HUB that they send their exit traffic to to filter the traffic even better. They also tend to add hosted free sites to their lists in an effort to garner more sales which is a fantastic approach.

If you look at pure economics of the issue - there are quite a few Link Lists out there that do get more traffic than some of the bigger TGPs - you would be surprised at the number of Linklists that have well over 50,000 surfers a day. Now once that traffic gets filtered to categories - Using one of my Link Lists or even GGs, Tommys or Richards Realm - the hosted free sites that get listed, stay around forever - no rotation off the list like a TGP, and no replacing normally with other hosted free sites.
As a matter of fact most hosted free sites get a special place on some Linklists to get even more traffic than a normal WM submitted free site.

The next part of the equation is to look at the search engine keywords you are targetting - dont take something like "sex" or "porn" as a good indicator, because again you are talking some trash traffic compared to more targetted traffic to a specific niche.
However if you look at the results for something you are really pushing - say and example would be cumshots -
http://www.google.com/search?q=cumshots&hl=en&lr=&filter=0
you will see that the top 20 on Google are almost exclusively Link Lists and most are their niche categories for cumshots and facials.
That traffic is Golden because youve already knocked out the people looking for watersports :)

Now think about the conversions of that traffic if you have a hosted free site on all of those Link Lists - and then compare it to what you might get from 80,000 people looking at you free movies on a group of TGPs - and the Link list is going to get a good percentage of traffic thats looking for good sites to spend their money( a good rule of thumb is around 5%) - wheras a TGP with CJ or traffic skimming might get a .002% conversion rate - now plug in your profit per sale - and you will see the difference - and its a major gain for those sponsors using the hosted free sites.

Great information Linkster. Defiant and I have been talking about adding HFS to Depraved Dollars and you post just confirmed we need to do this pronto. And since we're stuck inside with this ice storm that's supposed to continue for the next 24 hours, it would be a good time to start putting them together, as long as the power holds out. :)

As per Linksters article, there are a million ways to do this. Without some serverside tricks that can make the experience automatic, you can do it with SSI (Server Side Includes) or PHP.

I am not partial to either, but I feel that the SSI method has a slight performance edge over the PHP method strictly due to the size of the SAPI handler in Apache. This article will cover both methods.

Things you need to have:

You need to know the code that you will be linking to within the pages.
You need to have the reseller ID position within the affiliate URL figured out.
You need to make sure that you know how to have the gallery pages parsed by either PHP or SSI. Most servers might require you to have the extension of the gallery page as .php or .shtml.

So, lets get started.

Lets decide which method to use. My preference is SSI, so lets do it with SSI first. We will name the file gallery.shtml, and the webmaster will send his traffic to:

http://www.domain.com/gallery.shtml?affiliateid

The code on your page will look something like this:

<a href="http://www.site.com/client,site,<!--#echo var="QUERY_STRING"-->.html">Test Link</a>

If you wanted to use PHP, the webmaster will send his traffic to:

http://www.domain.com/gallery.php?affiliateid

The code on your page will look something like this:

<a href="http://www.site.com/client,site,<?php echo $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING']?>.html">Test Link</a>

Remember, the pieces <!--#echo var="QUERY_STRING"--> or <?php echo $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING']?> are replaced in your html whereever you need to have the affiliates ID coded. Since the page is parsed with either SSI or PHP, it will replace the 'bad html' before it is sent to the browser. You might need to use Notepad or some other text editor to do the final work since FrontPage and DreamWeaver may see the html created above as invalid.

In any case, you should be able to start creating hosted freesites and galleries for your affiliates and watch that traffic grow.

An additional note. If you are doing this for freesites, you need to make sure EVERY link contains the code at the end of the link to pass the affiliate's code from one page to the next. Not only do you need to code the links to your affiliate program, you need to code the links to the next pag including your enter link, your gallery 1/gallery 2 links.

Thanks for that post Linkster...I think it's the first time I've seen the HFS concept broken down concisely and completely |headbang|

In general, I'm willing to sign up to and try out any sponsor who offers quality HFS. The only thing I would add as a note to the sponsors is :

PLEASE DON'T RE-USE THE SAME PAGE DESIGNS OVER AND OVER!!! Sure, you're going to recycle them, but many sponsors offering HFS just recycle the same 2 or 3 site designs over and over just changing the pictures. For a sponsor to offer HFS that sell memberships most effectively, there should be a broad range of site designs/layouts that are only re-used occasionally. :)

Nice one, Sparky.

The passing of the aff code from page to page is somewhat tricky at first and it surprises me of the number of HFS in which the aff code is dropped after the warning page. I use php simply because I understand the coding better. After my four htmls are finished, I open them in EditPad and convert the htmls to phps using a series of replace statements. As an an example;

Replace all <a href="galleryindex.html"> with
<?php
echo "<A HREF=\"galleryindex.php?$affcode\">";
?>

It might seem a little hard at first but you can train a monkey to do it.

BTW, I have simple, detail instructions written and am will to share them. Just send me a PM.

cd34
2005-01-29, 12:53 PM
that assumes that you have RegisterGlobals turned on -- which used to be the default for php, however, most hosting companies turn it off.

If you're going to use $affcode, do something like:

incoming link: http://domain.com/page.php?affcode=asdf

At the top of the page:
<?php $affcode=$_REQUEST['affcode'];?>

then, in each of your links

<a href="page2.php?<?php echo $affcode;?>">page 2</a>

Here's another version of a hosted free site script I made for a sponsor some time ago. I like this way because the surfer will not fuck around with the URL itself, because they might end up not getting the free porn. If you have a "1234" in the querty string, it's easy for a surfer to delete it and thus not get tracked.
Another benefit is that the template designer doesn't have to worry about passing on the webmaster ID to the next page.

http://www.nuvisiongroup.com/fhs/site1/1234/index.html <--- "1234" is the webmaster ID and can be changed to what ever you like.

Ok, as co-owner of Crypt Cash (http://www.cryptcash.com) I'd like some feed back on the few we have available. I know we've seemed dormant for a while, but I assure you it's all being worked on behind the scenes. New things coming from us, including more FHS.. so, before I build a lot of them I'd like to know what the thoughts are on the ones I have so I can make sure to build properly on the future ones for you guys and gals.. :)

Osiris -- I've got some of your stuff listed already, and the two HFS you've got are just fine. My one issue would be that the Goth Lesbian HFS has no nudity :( From my point of view, as long as you're varying the layouts, colors and graphics/banners from one HFS to the next you'll be fine, i.e. the two HFS you have use the exactly the same colors so even with the variations in layout they still look very similar. I've got some decent Goth and Vampire traffic building up so I'd love to have more HFS to list in those cats :)

Alright, so more nudity, and varying color schemes. Does it matter if they match the site? I always felt that matching the Gallery/FS to the site you're promoting helps conversions.. But if it doesn't matter to you guys that they don't match I'll definitely make the colors different on future additions..

Would you all be opposed to having a link on the paysites that lead to a Gothic Links list with your ref codes in it? It will NOT be a pop because I don't think we'll ever put them up, but a link towards the bottom of the page like sponsors do with Mailer Boxes.. but not that big or intrusive.

I think I can speak for just about everyone on this. More ways for me to make money are always good, especially if they're tasteful |headbang|

If I can link to a gothic LL with my ref codes everywhere I'd list that as well on my link list :)

As to the color issue, while it can be argued that making a free site look similar to the paysite tour can boost sales, it's just not practical to do that too much with HFS.

Osris, what is the URL to Gothic Links?

So long as you are linking to a hub type site that is only promoting your pay sites, you will be okay. Take a look of some of Outback Cash's HFS sites for a good example.

On the other hand, if you link to something like http://www.gothiclinks.com then you got a problem. In this thread - http://www.greenguysboard.com/board/showthread.php?t=12047 - DangerDave said.

First off.. I am not a big fan on recips on hosted stuff.. If I send them the surfer to a FHS, then I expect them to look/buy or come back via the back button or closing the window.

Another thing to consider in using an outside link. Even though the LL has a protential to earn money from listing your HFS, you will want to comply with the LL's rules. In so doing keep in mind that your link to a Gothic Links list will use up one of your three outgoing links.

Chop Smith, it wouldn't be on the free hosted sites themselves, those will be recip free. What we're thinking of doing, if my partner and I can come to an agreement on it, is place a small, non-intrusive text link at the bottom of our paysites.. Like how some sponsor have a big mailer box, instead of something like that which takes traffic/sales away from the webmaster it would include their linking code, as Greenguy mentioned in the post: linkslist.com/?2356 That way you'll get credit for everything listed.. :)

I'm not associated with gothiclinks.com, I'll have to read the thread entirely to see what happened with them.

We did and we are now offering hosted freesites as well. Each one has 24 pics over 2 galleries, for both of our sites. You can even choose if you want them to point to Tour 1 or Tour 2 (flows much nicer with a reality feel). We're happy to improve + be progressive in our affiliates needs.

zombiegirl - one thing that I think Link List owners would like to see on each HFS is an actual title for the site - like you did on http://www.dirtysdicksuckers.com/free/dds03/?nats=MTI6Mzoy with "Dirty Dick Sucking Hookers"

Other then that, the sites all look different enough so the "template" issue isn't rearing it's ugly head - nice work :)

It's really just an odd coincidence that today I finally got off of my lazy ass to add some more HFSs to Filthy Earl and hit the no title brick wall. Fetish Hits a has a whole bunch of sites I'd like to add, but there doesn't appear to be a real title for a single one of them. I could create a title for each one, but if the title isn't on the site itself, it defeats the whole point of having a title.

It would be nice to be able to hit a preview link to verify what I'm linking to, but that's a whole other topic. So, I think I added few more Sammy Smack sites and said the hell with it.

We're in the process of creating some free hosted sites for affiliates to use. On the topic of including title tags on the pages, is there a preference for either:

1. An overall title for the site, which appears as the title on each page of the site. Basically same title tag on each page.

--or--

2. Each page of the site has a title tag but each title tag is different depending on the content of the actual page.

I'm trying to find out if there is any advantage to doing it one way over the other before we start producing the free sites.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you can offer.

Free Sites have titles, which is what Link List owners use as the text to link to the sites. When I'm building them, sometimes I carry the site title thru on all the pages & sometimes I don't - but as long as the 1st page has one, most of us will be very happy :)

The fact that you used title 'tag' caught my eye. We're not asking you to use just the title meta tag. We want to see the site's unique title on at least the warning page and the title should never be the same as the paysite it is promoting. ;)

Not to get too far off-topic, but you might want to consider that for some niches a true fan won't care that the content has no nudity. I know that when I'm shopping for bondage content I usually don't notice if the model doesn't get nude.

One of the first changes I insisted on when i started working for our program is that we started to add a number of hosted freesites in our program. I can see the value of getting behind the idea and making it at the very least equal to the efforts we are putting in with out hosted Galleries. Now for every 2 galleries built there is automatically 1 freesite added as well.
ooops, I told to much LOL

We were talking about the "exactly the same only different" thing here this morning. We're going at it from the other direction, and starting with FHS instead of galleries. And with a little planning, every new free hosted site design can kick out at least a couple of new galleries.

Simon - that's the way I'd do it as well - my comment was sorta directed at sponsors that already have Hosted Galleries :)

Either approach is fine, just so long as you gap some of this quality traffic. I started out using Jim's approach, then I went to Simon's and now what we do is select 24 to 30 images from a set, build the free site using 20 to 24 of the images (we always try to state with 20 but can not always lay it out with that few), then we take gallery 1 of the HFS and modify it for the TGP gallery. Thus, we have 256's HFS and 256 FHG's. We have found that by letting the HFS drive the FHG that you can keep both looking fresh since you do not have to develop your HFS theme around a damn gallery template.

One thing that sponsors fail on in the HFS world and it is almost as important to link list owners as the quality of the HFS, has only been mentioned one time in all the HFS discussions on the board. In this thread http://www.greenguysboard.com/board/showthread.php?t=10097 , Boogie made this comment
A large number of sites. 10 is not enough. 20 isn't either! Keep them coming. The point is in order to be successful with HFS's, sponsors have to commit to putting HFS's out on a regular basis. I would say at least one per week for each site, but never more that one per day per site. As for as consistency in producing hosted free promos, I think Extreme Paychecks has nailed it.

GG- I still don't think that covers it.
I can get Miles of gallery links in txt format..
but I haven't found one that has
SiteName|URL|Description format, available in txt format easy to import.
It's the sponsors site - let them write the title and descrip.
Why do you or I, or one of your underpaid employees :), need to spend hours doing it?

I like writing my own descriptions - make them look more like normal sites as opposed to sponsor hosted ones. Most of the descriptions that I see for any hosted stuff is bad in my opinion, mostly because it's stuff I'd never say or use.

And as far as the OC sites, still hosting my own until the NATS thing gets figured out.

Here's a sample of some txt files... this one site text file is 115 lines...

I don't see any Pipes here. ie, Site name, Title, description.

Guessing Chop may have an actual working promo in a bit.

Fair enough :)
For Marks, I'd rewrite too, but to fill out other domains, I'd rather dump.

I am bad, Dareutwo. In my rush to whore, I miss-read your questions. I thought your were talking about the Adult Paymaster's HFS. Thanks for not slapping me, Greenguy. However, Dare, if it is HFS that you want to dump, then there is a solution.

My LL has a "report bad link" on each listing.

Against my better judgement I added in some HFS that had more then one Enter link on the first page.

I can tell you by my mailbox full of reported bad links that surfers really dislike having a misleading Enter links on sites.

I'm bumping this thread because it's obvious that many sponsors who are providing HFSs haven't read it yet. I signed up to an -anonymous- sponsor last night for the sole purpose of listing their free sites. I went to grab the HFS links this morning and a quick scan of their free sites made me say "fuck them" out loud. Some of the sites I checked were okay, but I'm not going to filter through a moutain of shit to find one piece of tasty corn.

Amongst the errors:
*No title on the pages. In the title bar, yes - but not on the page itself.
*Single word titles that are nothing more than a girl's name.
*Exit link to WarningPages.com. (There have been numberous complaints about WarningPages blocking the surfer's back button. Plus, if I'm not making money on the link - it shouldn't be there. Exit to Google to you greedy bastards. :D My greed outweighs yours.)
*Pages with horizontal scroll.
*Galleries opening in new window.

And don't get me started about the ones that refer to a braces-wearing teen as a "dirty |ittle gir|". That's a whole other topic.

UW - thanks - as I was just going through this thread yesterday after recommending it someone :)

Ive noticed a really bad trend developing with a few sponsors - in their haste to have lots of hosted free sites and provide them on a regular basis (which I think is really great) - they have turned the work of building these sites over to unsupervised outsourced labor. Then without even looking at the product they are posting the HFS's for their affiliate WMs to use.
I have one company that stands out in that they have used the exact same template for over 30 HFS's for each of their paysites - as well as providing content to the builders that has nothing to do with the paysite niche - how do you sell handjobs to a surfer by having two different models pose and rub their own pussy - it doesnt make any sense - especially when there is no text to lead the surfer to think they might even "possibly" see these same models on the site giving a handjob.
This is just a small example of how sponsors waste money on outsourcing and waste the affiliates time with junk

The worst part of all of this is that I informed this same sponsor three times through their affiliate manager that I would no longer list their HFS's unless they started taking an interest in their promo tools - but I got an email this morning with 10 more HFS's - same templates, same junk content and same non-selling shit
Guess I need some new sponsors :)

I'd love to know what company is selling these pieces of shit to programs like Dee Cash & Join Right Now & the 1st batch of Rage Cash HFS's and a couple others that I just have on "ignore" when they release them.

I've pointed a lot of programs to this thread as well as this one:
http://www.greenguysboard.com/board/showthread.php?t=30075
but I think what we need to do is find the people that are building these horrendous piles of crap & bash them in public a bit so that they change the way they make HFS's & stop ripping of the companies that think they are doing a good thing by providing webmasters with useless HFS.

I'm in total agreement with the last 3 posts in this thread. I waste too much time picking through hosted stuff that I list then a few months later some of them 302 to something I didn't list. Of the hundreds I have listed over the years there are probably only a few dozen left.

Sponsors either need to do it right or don't try. If the title is pussy licking lesbians and one gallery has that content and the next is some gal giving a handjob how does one list it? This one doesn't.

Greenie - actually you hit the name of the company I was talking about in your post - and its a shame because although Im not a "whale" I do make some good consistent money with the program - although if they took the time to really get some good HFS's Im sure that amount I make would triple - as well as you and some others I know would be more likely to really push them - Deecash - are you listening??? Its just a shame those outsourcing companies are affecting their bottom line so much

My numbers different from your statement. On HFS Links, I have over 8,500 hfs listed. Thru 03/06/06, when HFSLinks.com was one year old, my bot had reported the following number of errors.

Code: 301 - 39
Code: 302 - 77
Code: 403 - 34
Code: 404 - 58
Code: 503 - 2

As you well know, a bot is not perfect. Many of those 301's and 302's were good links.

As we discussed in OTB two weeks ago, sponsors' hfs' should be treated as a submitted site. They should be reviewed and if the sponsor is a cheat then they should be blacklisted.

In my opinion, less than 2% going bad in a year is not a bad record for sponsors offering hfs'.

Sponsors either need to do it right or don't try. If the title is pussy licking lesbians and one gallery has that content and the next is some gal giving a handjob how does one list it? This one doesn't.

Now, this is a problem. I did not invent the process of taking two fhg and building a free site of them, Since I started doing "fillers" several sponsors have began doing it. Maybe they should have read this. (http://www.hfslinks.com/members/aboutfillers.html) They tend to forget to theme the hfs.

Chop - I see no problem whatsoever with using two of the hosted galleries for making free sites - however as you say they really need to be on theme and similar - heck most of the real sucessful free site submitters (not hosted) that I know of have been using their own two tgp galleries and putting a main and warning page on them for as long as I can remember - time saver.

As far as hosted free sites going down/redirecting etc - I can definitely think of one sponsor that is famous for doing this on a regular basis - I used to catch them by doing two bot runs daily - just to identify what was going on - and these days even though they had many hundreds of HFS's I only have a few left listed for them. I also know of one sponsor that used to rotate(Im not sure if they still do as I dropped pushing them) the internal pages - you wouldnt catch it on a standard bot run because everything seemed hunky-dorey to the bot :)

As I said I have deleted thousands for changing their content and for going 404. I'm not going to argue who is right or wrong and what numbers are correct. I know which sponsors have cheated in the past and I don't use them.

I have nothing more to say than for each webmasters to keep an eye on all his hosted stuff just like his submitted stuff.

I understand. As you know I do not list all published hfs' as some are just 'pieces of shit' and if I discover a sponsor cheating with his hfs' I would take him down.

No one seems to have a problem outting bad submitters. Perhaps it is time to start sharing information about sponsor hosted free sites in public. GG and I have talked about a rating system but each batch of releases would have to be rated as you never know who they were out sourced. For a free service, a rating system would be subjective and time consuming.

As I said I have deleted thousands for changing their content and for going 404. I'm not going to argue who is right or wrong and what numbers are correct. I know which sponsors have cheated in the past and I don't use them.

I was not trying to start an arguement. If so I would have said: "Generalizations are not worth a damn, including this one." Churchhill, I think. :D

I hope more sponsors will start making good movie hosted free sites. Checking HFSLinks.com, it looks like there are less than 1,000 HFS with movie content.
